Although a lot of Nano server will be deemed unnecessary after containers gain more steam, Nano Server is still a critical part of the 70-740 exam.<br \/>\nWhat services are and are not available in Nano Server?<br \/>\n<strong>Supported<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DNS Server<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>IIS Web Server<\/li>\n<li>Hyper-V<\/li>\n<li>Desired State Configuration<\/li>\n<li>Network Performance Diagnostics Server<\/li>\n<li>System Center Virtual Machine<\/li>\n<li>Shielded Virtual Machines<\/li>\n<li>Containers<br \/>\n<strong>Not Supported<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Nano Server cannot be configured to use a proxy server to access the internet.<\/li>\n<li>NIC Teaming (specifically, load balancing and failover, or LBFO) is not supported. Switch-embedded teaming (SET) is supported instead.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">System Center Configuration Manager and System Center Data Protection Manager are not supported.<\/li>\n<li>Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) cmdlets and BPA integration with Server Manager are not supported.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Nano Server does not support virtual host bus adapters (HBAs).<strong>Activation<br \/>\n<\/strong>Nano Server does not need to be activated with a product key. When functioning as a Hyper-V host, Nano Server does not support <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/library\/dn303421%28v=ws.11%29.aspx\" data-linktype=\"external\">Automatic Virtual Machine Activation<\/a> (AVMA). Virtual machines running on a Nano Server host can be activated using <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/library\/jj612867(v=ws.11).aspx\" data-linktype=\"external\">Key Management Service<\/a> (KMS) with a generic volume license key or using <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/library\/dn502534(v=ws.11).aspx\" data-linktype=\"external\">Active Directory-based activation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No Migration or Upgrade path since Nano Server is new to 2016.<br \/>\n<strong>Creating a new Nano server to connect to a DC:<\/strong><br \/>\nnew-nanoserverimage -deploymenttype guest -edition standard &#8211;<br \/>\nmediapath d:\\ -targetpath<br \/>\nc:\\temp\\nanoserver2.vhdx -computername nano2 -domainblobpath<br \/>\nc:\\temp\\nano3blob.txt<br \/>\n(<strong>djoin<\/strong> command: djoin \/provision \/domain domainname \/machine computername<br \/>\n\/savefile filename.txt)<br \/>\nNe<strong>w-NanoServerImage switches for services:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compute Installs the Hyper-V role on the image specified by the TargetPath<br \/>\nvariable.<\/li>\n<li>Clustering Installs the Failover Clustering role on the image specified by the<br \/>\nTargetPath variable.<\/li>\n<li>OEMDrivers Adds the basic drivers included in Server Core to the image specified by the TargetPath variable.<\/li>\n<li>Storage Installs the File Server role and other storage components on the image specified by the TargetPath variable.<\/li>\n<li>Defender Installs Windows Defender on the image specified by the TargetPath variable.<\/li>\n<li>Containers Installs host support for Windows Containers on the image specified by the TargetPath variable.Add the <strong>Packages <\/strong>variable install a package in the packages directory.<strong><br \/>\nTroubleshooting Nano Server<br \/>\n<\/strong>You can troubleshoot Nano Server using Serial with EMS (Emergency Management Services).<br \/>\nDebug Nano Server through Serial, IP, USB, Firewall IEEE 1394.<br \/>\nRecovery console is available through a text console physically or through a virtual machine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nano server is Microsoft&#8217;s way to provide a very small footprint of an OS that gives the user everything they need to run certain services.
